directions

  • Bake yam for 40-45 minutes at 400.
  • (This will leave the yam baked nearly all the way through, but firm enough to slice when cool).
  • Remove yam from oven and allow to cool enough so that you can handle it.
  • When cool, remove skin and slice into 1-inch bite-size pieces.
  • Melt 1 TBSP of butter in large skillet.
  • Add chopped onion and pecans.
  • Saute for a couple of minutes until onions pieces begin to turn brown.
  • Add yam slices, maple syrup, and cinnamon and saute for 3-5 minutes, stirring often, or until yam pieces are hot and tender.

  1. This recipe was created by Todd Wilbur for his book "Top Secret Restaurant Recipes 2" and www.topsecretrecipes.com

  2. I loved this recipe! I'm one of those that didn't appreciate the flavor of sweet potatoes unless it tasted like pumpkin pie=) The ingredients made this recipe too good to pass up. I followed the directions, quadrupling the recipe to feed 4 adults and a 4 & 5 year old. None of us could get enough-even the kids! The flavor of the sweet potatoes blended amazingly with the onions and pecans, and the maple syrup was not overpowering at all. Thanks!

  3. We enjoyed this dish very much. I have never had the original, so can't comment on how successful the recipe is as a copycat, but it is a very nice side dish. I found it easy to make; the directions were accurate, including the baking time for the yam. I did end up sprinkling one packet of Splenda over the potatoes near the end, as I didn't think they were quite sweet enough. I served this with some pork chops & asparagus.

  4. I used regular sweet potatoes for this one. I would saying it's a moderately easy recipe, but not TOO easy. All in all I thought it was good, and the smell was DEFINATELY a pleasing scent. I had to add more maple syrup to mine in the end though because I didn't think the flavor came through enough. Might make this one again.

  5. I quadrupled the recipe for a family of 4 1/2. There was not much left over. I have never had the Tony Roma's but these were wonderful. I didn't have garnets so I used yams but otherwise followed fairly closely. Good recipe Martha

(As many of you know Silent Cricket passed away on Feb. 29. Since she loved Recipezaar so much and so many on Recipezaar have shown their love for her, and have enjoyed her recipes, her personal information will remain here indefinitely just as she wrote it. Her lines at the end of this section sound somewhat prophetic as the last chapter of her earthly existence has been written.) Well, the time has come for me to change my users' name. After being, "OzCoMartha" because of having lived for three years in Australia and then moving to Colorado, I have decided to "turn over a new leaf." I chose this name because many moons ago I used to be able to "chirp" like a cricket and the "silent" refers to the present time when I'm taking a break...But, perhaps after a season, however long I decide that needs to be, I may be back and then I will fill in more details about myself...
